Training Practices:
There are six training practices currently, with a total of eight trainers. This is a brief introduction to them.
Rushbottom Lane, Benfleet
Rushbottom Lane Surgery is located in Benfleet. We look after about 11,000 patients from purpose built premises. We are also involved in medical student and nurse training. We have 5 whole time equivalent partners. We have an excellent and friendly primary care team.
Dr Sunil Gupta's practice
Riverside Medical Centre, Hullbridge
Dr Sylvia Conner's practtice
A friendly, busy, easily accessible, semi-urban Practice with approximately 6,900 patients. There are three full time partners in the Practice: Dr Colm Donnelly, Dr Sylvia Conner and Dr Jonathan Rouse and one part-time salaried GP: Dr Peter Cornes. We have been an established ‘Training Practice’ since 2001.
It is the philosophy of the Practice team to fully support the GP Registrar within a learning environment that promotes open discussion and active participation with a well equipped Registrar’s and Training Room.
We are also involved with Nurse training, Medical Student training and soon F2 training. For previous Registrar feedback or further information, please visit our website at:

Valkyrie Surgery, Westcliff
Dr Sue Callaghan and Dr Rupert Halliday's practice
Valkyrie surgery is located in Westcliff, a mile west of Southend town centre. Our 6 partners care for almost 10,000 patients. We have a long history as a training practice, with 2 current trainers and a third expected on-stream soon. Training is therefore a key part of our work and we also get involved in medical student and nurse training (and F2 doctors soon). The practice ethos has always been to provide good medical care in a patient-friendly way, and we think we manage to do that.
There's a lot to see and do. To quote feedback from a previous satisfied registrar: 'Valkyrie surgery offers the best all round experience because of the diversity of patients'. Come and find out!

The Pall Mall Surgery, Leigh on Sea
Dr Lionel Nagle's practice
The Hollies Surgery, Hadleigh
Dr Shan Whitear's surgery
Hadleigh is very accessible, being on the outskirts of Southend, just off the A13. Hadleigh has a very stable population with a mix of mainly retired elderly and young commuters that work in the city. We are an old established practice, looking after just over 12 000 patients. We have 5 full-time partners and at present one GP Registrar. We are involved in teaching medical students and nurses.
Registrars have enjoyed their year with us and have felt prepared for independent GP work. They have their own large room, which is fully equipped with video equipment, TV, video and up to date library. We feel it is very important that the registrar has their own permanent name plate on the door when they arrive to help them feel part of our team.
The staff are extremely friendly and easy to get on with and have a great social calendar throughout the year. We eat out a lot! One partner is very fanatical about sailing, so there is the chance to see Southend from the sea. Failing that, for you shopaholics “CHOICE” is across the road!

Audley Mills Surgery, Rayleigh
Dr Roger Tisi, Dr Chris Lewis and Dr Alan Kerry's practice
Rayleigh is a market town with a large commuter population, mainly affluent. We look after about 18,000 of its residents from purpose built premises in the centre of town. With 3 trainers (including course organiser) among our 9 partners, and with 2 salaried doctors, 2 registrars and full complement of staff we may not be small, but we are friendly. We value providing our patients with as much medical care ‘in-house’ as possible, and we aim to practice robust evidence-based care. Our educational meetings are lively, sometimes contentious but always good-humoured affairs where we encourage debate in an attempt to be always learning from one another and developing our service.
